Ivory Coast President Plans Constitutional Revision Before Election

Ivory Coast’s president, Alassane Ouattara says he will propose modifications to the country’s constitution.

Ouattara had earlier condemned claims by the opposition that he planned to sideline opponents from this year’s presidential elections.

At a ceremony to mark the New Year, Ouattara explained that the move was to make the constitution more coherent to further consolidate the state and bring institutions closer to the citizens.

On warnings by opposition about introducing age restrictions that would bar former presidents Laurent Gbagbo, and Henri Konan Bedie, eighty five, from running for office in October, he said that anyone could be a candidate.
