LASG moves against plastic waste on waterfronts

Lagos State Government has commenced the move to eliminate plastic waste from waterfronts across the State by launching the Clean-Up of Lagos Waterfront initiative at Ibeshe Waterfront in Ikorodu axis of the State.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign, the Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti said the state, like many other Mega Cities of the World, was faced with a wide range of socio-economic and environmental challenges, mostly pollution of the marine environment, which had become a major source of concern globally.

The Commissioner also said the Marine Ecosystem was a delicate one that should be protected to effectively facilitate socio-economic activities such as transportation, power generation, irrigation and habitat to aquatic life.

According to the Commissioner, the water bodies, which are priceless gifts of nature with huge aesthetic, tourism and economic values, have been subjected to all forms of abuse and degradation, including dumping and littering of the waterfronts with solid wastes and debris.
